No stress, Know peace - Self Care in the Age of Social Justice

At a time where many are wrapping their minds and lives around their new future in the aftermath of a pandemic, and others were breathing a sigh of cautious relief for a verdict that should've been the norm, we find ourselves bracing for impact. We all witnessed with horror, distress and rage what has been transpiring in our world.

While the media replays our fears on a constant loop with agonizing narration, the stress of it all manifests in our emotions, digestion, immune system and skin. The mind and our skin are connected on many different levels. There are a lot (A LOT) of nerve endings that are connected to our skin, which of course wraps around our organs, so as our heightened emotions play out neurologically, our bodies react. This brings increased inflammation, hormonal fluctuations, digestive issues, and more, not to mention anxiety, depression, and rumination. With all of that going on, we often forget what our skin may be feeling. And then we see break outs, dry skin or overly oily skin, rashes, etc.

  1. Turn it off and take a walk
  2. Exercise
  3. Take time out to do something you love and schedule it if you have to- read a book, take a bath or long shower, watch a movie
  4. Check out breathing exercises, yoga or a new workout, prayer and meditation, or other practices that can help you feel grounded
  5. Take a social media break
  6. Get organized! Sit down and make plans for yourself
