Keeping that Summer Glow

Keeping that Summer Glow

By Kim Joseph

Greasy and oily skin is never in, especially during the Summer but glowing, smooth, hydrated, supple skin is year-round goals. Your skin is your largest organ and can hold a lot of toxins, wastes, and impurities that need to be eliminated every so often to function properly. The pores of your skin are prone to store dead skin, oil, dirt, and makeup. If you don’t clean all of that out, your system goes into overdrive which can cause issues for your skin as it tries to compensate for the imbalance. Your skin will always give you signals when it’s time for a deep clean in the form of dull, uneven, oily, dry, and sensitive textures. Proper care helps restore and rejuvenate your skin to its natural, healthy state. Literally glowing from the inside out. A deep clean for your skin means removing toxins and impurities – mainly through perspiration through your pores - that will help improve skin health, restore firmness, appearance, and tone, and help you get rid of problems such as dry skin, itchy skin, rashes, blemishes, and more. The skin is a reflection of how your body is feeling on the inside. Take a week or a few days and see how you and your skin feel after doing these few tips for natural skin detoxification.

Steam your face – One of my personal favorites. Steaming opens your pores and makes way for vital ingredients to penetrate the pores while removing impurities. Boil a pot of hot water and hover over the steam with a towel draped over your head for 10 minutes. And if you’re feeling ambitious, throw in a citrus essential oil or the rind of a citrus fruit for an even deeper clean.

Ice massage – Massaging your face with ice helps to reduce and alleviate inflammation. Take one or two pieces of ice and wrap it in a clean, damp towel. Apply to affected area after cleansing and before applying product and massage skin for up to 15 minutes with short intervals. You can repeat the process throughout the day as needed.

Herbal teas – Ginger tea, nettle, chamomile, echinacea, dandelion, and sarsaparilla root provide great health benefits and support the body and skin. Drinking two cups a day maximizes those benefits.

Drink lots of water – This one is a no-brainer and the one we always hear the most, because it is the best starting point for your body, skin, and overall system. A good 16 ounces of filtered or spring water aids in skin health and resiliency.

Clean diet – If you are a lover of sugar, bread, dairy, animal meat, and fast food put them down for at least a week and try some fresh fruit, berries, and leafy greens. Your skin will thank you.

No makeup – Let your skin breathe. Without the burden of toxins and chemicals found in makeup, your skin can replenish and rely on its natural oils.

Exfoliate – Up the ante a little bit and instead of exfoliating once in a week, try two or three. During this time, your skin will regenerate at a faster rate, which will help your body fight against clogged pores.

Regular Exercise – Your body’s sweat is the natural way of warding off toxins and impurities which makes exercise an easy and natural way to deep clean your skin. Exercising five times a week can help speed up benefits.

Epsom salt bath – Fill up your bathtub and pour in some Epsom salts and soak for 15 – 20 minutes. Epsom salts draws out toxins, impurities and dirt and leaves your skin soft and hydrated.

Glowing, healthy skin starts from within with just a few simple steps that yield long-lasting results with consistency. Have you tried any of these techniques or any of your own that we didn’t mention?
